A Three-Phase Knowledge Initiative

We are building the knowledge architecture the menstrual equity movement needs to scale.

PERIOD. connects rigorous research to a multilingual digital education platform, and amplifies it through participatory media that makes menstrual health everyone's business. Anchored by The Period Dictionary, a digital-first, multilingual platform with companion physical pocket editions.

What PERIOD. stands for

Pioneering Inclusive Education, Research, and Innovation On Destigmatisation.

A complete knowledge-to-action pipeline that generates original evidence, translates it into accessible education products that meet communities where they are, and amplifies the conversation through media that makes menstrual health everyone's business.

① The Problem

A global crisis hidden in plain sight.

Menstruation is one of the most universal human experiences, yet it remains one of the most stigmatised, poorly understood, and deliberately silenced aspects of health worldwide. The silence is not passive. It is structural.

It is embedded in cultural norms that treat menstruation as shameful, in education systems that omit it, in health systems that deprioritise it, and in policy frameworks that render it invisible.

② How It Works

Three phases. One self-reinforcing infrastructure.

Each phase generates outputs that feed the next, creating a cycle of evidence generation, knowledge dissemination, and cultural engagement that strengthens with use.

01
Phase One

Research

Building the evidence base the field has never had.

We generate open-access menstrual health literacy research: primary, mixed-methods evidence mapping the literacy gaps, stigma drivers, and cultural practices shaping menstrual health behaviour worldwide, with deep grounding in African and Nigerian contexts.

The research phase is designed as ongoing, not one-off. Every finding feeds Phase 2 content. Every gap surfaces a Dictionary entry. Every cultural insight sharpens Phase 3 storytelling.

02
Phase Two

Education

Anchored by The Period Dictionary. Three product formats, one ecosystem.

Research becomes accessible through The Period Dictionary, the first comprehensive digital and multilingual platform dedicated exclusively to menstrual health terminology. Launching with 1,000 entries, expanding by 1,000 every six months.

Delivered through three complementary formats so no community is left out, whether they hold a smartphone or live beyond electricity.

03
Phase Three

Media

Period Chronicles. Bringing menstrual health out of textbooks and into culture.

The media phase transforms The Dictionary from a reference tool into a cultural conversation, through participatory, gender-inclusive media that meets people in classrooms, clinics, and at the pepper-soup joint.

Common Questions

Things people ask us.

How is this different from a sex-ed curriculum or a menstrual hygiene app? +
Curricula and apps are delivery products. The Period Dictionary is the knowledge layer they all draw on. We are not competing with menstrual health programmes. We are building the reference resource the entire field has been missing. Curricula, apps, helplines, clinic posters, and community trainers can all cite, link to, and pull from PERIOD.
Why include men and boys in menstrual health work? +
Because they are partners, fathers, teachers, healthcare workers, policymakers, and community leaders whose understanding directly shapes outcomes for women and girls. Excluding men from menstrual health education is one of the structural reasons stigma persists. PERIOD. is built so men and boys participate as a matter of design, not as an afterthought.
What happens to communities without internet access? +
Pocket-sized physical Dictionary editions and flashcard sets are distributed through A.G.E.N.C.Y, Pad Stations, Hand-to-Mind Clubs, and partner schools. The PWA is connectivity-adaptive. It works offline once installed. We designed for digital exclusion from day one, not as a retrofit.
Who owns the Dictionary content? +
The Period Collective holds distributed intellectual stewardship. The Dictionary itself is open-access. Premium app features and institutional licensing pathways exist as medium-term sustainability levers. The core knowledge stays free, multilingual, and accessible on any browser.
How does PERIOD. relate to TSO's other programmes? +
PERIOD. is a portfolio-level initiative that sits alongside Hand-to-Mind, OYAL, and A.G.E.N.C.Y, not inside them. It is the knowledge backbone that strengthens The Good Cycle Initiative most directly, but its outputs serve the entire menstrual equity field, including external researchers, educators, advocates, and policymakers worldwide.
