Period poverty is an overwhelming concept in sub-Saharan Africa. Women and girls either don’t have access to menstrual products and WASH (water, sanitation, and good hygiene) facilities or in the rare scenarios where they do, they don’t have any way of disposing of menstrual waste.

The solution lies in Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).  It’s the access to adequate information, preparation, and support with which to manage menstruation in a healthy, safe, and dignified manner.

We all should care about Menstrual Hygiene Management because it can further social and economic empowerment and growth. It can also contribute to achieving a number of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including, but not limited to: quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). Menstrualdayhygiene.org

Women in resource-poor parts of countries in the region, owing to lack of availability of adequate products, use old clothes, paper, cotton or wool pieces, and even leaves to manage their menstrual bleeding. This situation is worse for school girls.

A UNESCO report estimates that one in ten girls in Sub-Saharan Africa misses school during their menstrual cycle. By some estimates, this equals as much as twenty percent of a given school year.

Many girls drop out of school altogether once they begin menstruating. Should young women miss twenty percent of school days in a given year due to a lack of facilities or a lack of information or a lack of sanitary products?

PROGRAM DETAIL

Today, millions of women and girls* around the world are stigmatized, excluded, and discriminated against simply because they menstruate. In 2022, it’s no longer acceptable that a natural bodily function prevents women and girls from getting an education, earning an income, and fully and equally participating in everyday life.

It is our intention to ;

  • Break the taboos and end the stigma surrounding menstruation
  • Create and support global media awareness like “My Period Chronicles”
  • Raise awareness about the challenges women face regarding access to period care products, enlightenment about menstruation.

This year, thanks to Talku Talku, we have had thousands listen to what Menstrual Justice is about and have gone ahead to carry out physical outreaches impacting over 300 girls on Menstrual Hygiene.
